On 24th street in the Mission, not too far from where I live, there used be to a halal butcher. I loved that butcher shop, and feasted on lamb necks regularly. When it unexpected closed, I was crushed. But then something new came in. Something exciting. It was a sandwich shop. No, wait, a bakery [...]

And now for something completely different: regular, good old fashioned local beer and food blogging. Since my Old Oak Beer post is drifting off the top of the page, I’ve added a link in the right hand sidebar that will take you directly the our website. Plus, you’ll hear more from me as our release [...]

All in all, a mixed bag. It was crowded, expensive, and with long lines for food that wasn’t exactly street food. Yet the crowds were docile and friendly, the food delicious, and in spite of all of the problems, it seemed like a good time was had by all. A few pictures from the day: [...]

I’ve always drawn a pretty clear line between the roll of a blogger, and that of a reviewer. A reviewer has the resources and the journalistic obligation to visit a place repeatedly, ideally in secret to review the food. They wait until the restaurant has found it’s footing a bit, and use their very loud [...]

This past weekend brought out unusually hot weather again. The solution: cool off with a scoop from Humphry Slocombe. It turned out we weren’t the only ones with this idea, and it had been a record setting day for the local ice cream shop. After a scoop to cool down, we continued down Harrison to [...]

Note to Cinda, Elianna’s Mom: Cinda – I think it’d be best if you looked away. Remember that time we made your latkes? Maybe you should just read that again instead. This post… well, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with you seeing it. Down this road there lies a lot of pork, which is I know [...]

Allan of MissionMission apparently really likes Banana Cream Pies. At his birthday this past weekend, hosted at Bender’s in the Mission, he had three completely different Banana Cream Pies on hand for an epic birthday pie tasting. One from Mission Pie (pictures above), a butterscotch one from Mission Beach Cafe, and finally, a homemade pie which [...]

I think I might finally be able to kick my Dynamo Donuts habit, but I’m not so sure that it’ll lead to me loosing any weight. Late last night I walked by the new Humphry Slocombe ice cream shop, and saw they were in heavy construction mode. I gingerly poked my head in, and was [...]

So I know I’m a bit late for the party. Monk’s Kettle has been pretty extensively covered, and the consensus is that it’s great. I’ve been a few times, and always found it nothing less than stellar. Once, stopping in after dinner, we snagged the last order of the night of chocolate-peanut-butter bread pudding. [...]

On my way back from my new BBQ find in the Mission, I stumbled upon Yat’s, hard at work frying turkeys for Thanksgiving. All of the turkeys are injected with spices, then fried for about 55 minutes. They had just come out of the fryer and you could hear the skin still crackling on the street. [...]
