And now for something completely different: regular, good old fashioned local beer and food blogging. Since my Old Oak Beer post is drifting off the top of the page, I’ve added a link in the right hand sidebar that will take you directly the our website. Plus, you’ll hear more from me as our release [...]

On Thursday nights on Clara street, you can smell a wisp of malt aroma drifting through SOMA. Follow the aroma down a thin alley street, by garage doors and parked cars, and you’ll find an open garage as the source. Poke inside and you’ll find Patrick Horn of Pacific Brewing Laboratories and Bryan Hermannsson of [...]

NCHF was a blast. It’s just your regular beer festival, without the massive crowds, drunken idiots, or lines. Instead you have a community of homebrewers that come together to share stories and beers, and celebrate the craft together. The weekend if perfectly kicked on Friday night off with a massive Homebrew Chef German inspired dinner. [...]

After Pro Night and Club Night, on the Saturday of the National Homebrewer’s Conference I was finally able to attend some educational sessions. Let’s dive right in, shall we? Below you’ll find pictures and notes from sessions on Champagne beer, brewing with chocolate and brewing with anything else Tomme Arthur can get his hands on. [...]

Club night offers the chance for local homebrew clubs from all over the country to showcase their homemade creations for an appreciative crowd. The breadth of offerings is staggering, ranging from traditional brews made to style, to fruit filtered golden pales, to stouts being filtered through a coffee machine – and coffee. All told, [...]

The National Homebrewer’s Convention is off to a rocking start. I can’t make it to the educational sessions during the week, but am trekking out on BART to Oakland in the evening for the festivities. Last night was Pro Brewers Night, and the brewers came out swinging. They broke into some highly desirable beers for [...]

Sometimes you don’t want all the trappings of an extravagant dinner, with carefully orchestrated service and silver changes after every course. Sometimes, it’s important to just have some straight forward take-out from the local taqueria, and use it as an opportunity to drink some fun beers. With this attitude in mind, Brian (of Red White and Brew fame) and I set about [...]

“Beer is meant to be drunk” is an axiom I’ve tried to really take to heart when it comes to beer. With my homebrew, I figure I can always make more, and there are new and exciting recipes and styles to try. Just about every person who enters my apartment is offered the perfunctory first pint, as well [...]

The 18 Reasons homebrew tasting was quite the success. I arrived at seven, to find the small space already packed with excited beer drinkers. After unpacking my brews, they seemed to be gone before I knew it. The biggest hit of the beers I brought seemed to be my latest brew, a Mai Bock. A traditional [...]

This Thursday, I’ll be pouring homebrew at 18 Reasons for a Beer and Cheese tasting. It should be a good time - there will be great homebrew and cheeses from Bi-Rite. Rob of PFIFF! will be contributing as well, and if they’re anything like the homebrew of his I tasted this past weekend, Bi-Rite better be kicking [...]
