Frances

It’s happened again – I’ve fallen head over heels in love with a new restaurant – and her name is Frances.  Tucked away on a quiet corner on 17th street, just ending into the Casto, this tiny, typical “neighborhood restaurant” is anything but typical.
You see, the ongoing problem I have when visiting a restaurant is [...]

Baja Brewing

While traveling around Mexico, we found most of the beer to be exactly what you’d expect – typical export lagers.  Thin watery, mass produced versions of classic lagers, dumbed down till they taste of almost nothing, and cry out for a slice of lime to add some, any flavor.

One bright spot in this sea of [...]

Leg of the Beast @ Incanto

Incanto’s “Leg of the Beast” dinner is like a tribal dinner, with a community coming together to enjoy the spoils of the hunt. It helps that rather than gather around a fire, we sat sit in Incanto’s newly redone dining room.  Still, the sense of community and fun that comes from eating family-style is great, [...]

MSF Offal Night

It felt good to be back at Mission Street Food this week.  In the back, Anthony, Danny and Emma (the core MSF kitchen team) knocked out a stellar offal-tastic meal that featured some of the my favorite plates to ever come out of that Chinese kitchen.   I got the real sense they weren’t just [...]

Anchor & Hope

Hiding just off Mission in the SOMA district is Anchor & Hope – an east coast themed sea food restaurant, that aims to make a new englander feel at home out here on the west coast. In addition to their seafood, they have a newly expanded beer selection, both on tap, and in bottles.  Here [...]

Baker & Banker

I really should start this with a bit of a disclaimer.  I am in no way anything near an impartial reviewer for the new restaurant Baker & Banker.  Far from it – I’ve become friends with the chef/owners behind it, and have helped pick out the beer list (it’s looking gooooood) as well as am [...]

Aziza

I feel like I’ve been saying I wanted to go to Aziza forever.  Between a busy travel and work schedule, it always seemed like trekking out into the Richmond was too far just for dinner.  Eventually, I finally made it, raising the question: what took me so long? Aziza is stellar.

Hopleaf, Chicago

Our last stop in Chicago was Hopleaf.  Leaning more towards the “bar with a nice kitchen” vibe than The Publican, it was packed from when we arrived till when we left.  The menu highlights local purveyors, and looked like a nice spin on upscale bar food. We were excited to see what the kitchen produced.

Life & Limb Dinner

Let me start with this: Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head are some of my favorite breweries.   They are two of the most successful, widely available success stories of the craft beer movement.  One is a bit conservative, one a wild child, coming together to brew a collaboration beer – Life & Limb.  The beer(s) [...]

The Publican, Chicago

Gastropub is the new catchphrase of the moment. It implies a lot – the congenial atmosphere of your neighborhood watering hole, combined with upscale (but not too upscale!) food, and an above average beer collection. Ideally, a place like this has a beer manager, or cicarone, who will guide you through the [...]
