Brrrrrr.  I know it’s cliche for San Franciscans to complain about the weather, but it’s mighty chilly out.  The good news is that it’s perfect weather for winter warmers, imperial stouts and spiced dark ales, poured around a raging winter fire.  Or in my case, huddled around a space heater sat next to a non-functional-but-still-leaks-cold-air-fireplace.   Ah, the joys of renting in San Francisco.  But back to the point.

On Sunday, December 12th, I’ll be the special guest host at a Local: Mission Eatery Food Lab.  What is a Lab?  According to Yaron, the proprietor of Local, they are “hands-on, learning-by-doing, instructional labs, taught by Local’s chefs and our friends.  You handle, chop, slice, smell, and cook.  And we encourage you eat your homework.”

At the December gathering, we’ll be focusing on holiday beers, and pouring some of my favorites, including Anchor’s Our Christmas Ale, Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale and He’Brew Jewbelation 14, plus a few more surprises, including bottles pulled from my own cellar.

I’ll be working with Chef Jake to pair these beers up with some great treats, including a cheese pairing (the cheese pairing we’re serving is particularly exciting) and hearty winter fare. We’ll also be tasting the ingredients that go into beer, learning about the brewing process, and generally having a good time with beer, food and conversation.

Who is this lab for? This Lab is ideal for the budding beer geek, or wine aficionado that is curious to see how the other half lives.  No beer knowledge or experience is required, and questions and curious palates are encouraged to join in.  Afterwards, impress your friends with your ability to identify different malt roasts and hop flowers.
