Mission Street Food: Beer & Nosh Night

I’m very excited that next Saturday, March 21st, Beer & Nosh is going to get to be a part of something very special going on in the Mission. We’ll be spending the evening with Mission Street Food, and serving up some stellar food and big flavorful beers.  Anthony, Karen, Eli and I have worked to put together a fun night, with some plays on traditional pub fare, a few nods to the themes of the beers, and the usual Mission Street Food stamp on the food and experience. I sent Anthony home with a bag of beer ingredients and a mix of beers, and he’s come back with some great ideas.

For inspiration and thirst quenching, we turned to the beers of Shmaltz Brewing.  I think their off-kilter marketing and adventerous style-breaking beers would be a natural fit for Anthony’s culinary creations.  His bold, indulgent flavors and textures would be nicely offset by Shmaltz’s malt forward, food-friendly brews.  Like my favorite dishes of MSF, they’re big, but balanced with a surprisingly delicate hand.

PB & J: Pork Belly & Jicama  MSF Line

Anthony Myint  Messiah Bold Brisket with Onion Compote

Here’s our preliminary food and beer menus for the evening – Mission Street Food will post the final menu with prices and details when the date gets closer, and Anthony refines the last few things in executing the food.

Scallop Crudo with Beer-Carbonated Pomelo, Fennel, Upland Cress
Recommended Pairing: Coney Island Lager

Malted Maitake with Farro, Grape and Rosemary-Balsamic Vinaigrette
Recommended Pairing: Lenny’s RIPA

Grilled Blue Cheese Sandwich on IPA bread with Seared Broccoli Rabe
Recommended Pairing: Lenny’s RIPA

PB&J - Kurobuta Berkshire Pork Belly & Jicama on Fresh Home-made Flatbread
Recommended Pairing: Origin Pomegranate Ale

Lager Braised Sausage with Smoky Scallions and Cannelini Beans
Recommended Pairing: Coney Island Lager

Brown Ale Brisket, with Potato Pancake and Caramelized Onion Compote
Recommended Pairing: Messiah Bold

Humphrey Slocombe‘s Lenny RIPA & Toasted Caraway Brittle Ice Cream
Recommended Pairing: Lenny’s RIPA

Coney Island Lager Funnel Cake
Recommended Pairing: Coney Island Lager

Of course, these pairings are only starting points – I’d encourage you to mix and match.  For example, I bet the Origin’s slight alcohol heat and dry fruit flavor would be killer with the blue cheese grilled cheese and rabe. The bit of hop bitterness in the finish would pair nicely with the bitter rabe. Or, the dark malts in Messiah Bold would pick up nicely with the smokey scallions with the sausage.

With this á la carte spirit in mind, beers will be available in small pours, by the bottle, and flights.  Zak and I will be helping out on the beer end of things on the dining floor, answering questions and kibbitzing about beer, as well as delivering beer to the tables.  Karen will be keeping a stern eye on us as she runs the front on the house.  She’s provided me with a numbered map of the place, and really takes making sure that your food arrives hot and fast very seriously. She doesn’t need some nebbishy and klutzy beer-runners getting in the way and ruining her well oiled machine. While Zak and I apologizing for accidentally pouring beer on you, Eli will be contributing her skills in the kitchen ensuring that the latkes are fried to perfection.

Zak helpfully provided beer descriptions below  - also, he’s a huge fan of the Mission Melt paired with a barrel-aged sour beer.

Shmaltz Brews

HE’BREW Messiah Bold – 5.6% alc.
A deep, bold nut brown ale beautifully balanced with rich, dark malts and a complex hop character, converging to reveal a simply enchanting elixir.

HE’BREW Origin Pomegranate Strong Ale – 8% alc.
An imperial amber ale brewed with luscious pomegranate juice.  A sweet malt aroma leads into a slightly bitter finish.  Added during fermentation, the residual sugars from the pomegranate lend a unique balance to this delicious brew.

HE’BREW Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A – 10% alc.
Brewed to commemorate the death of standup comic and social critic, Lenny Bruce, Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A packs a punch.  The 20% rye malt contributes an earthiness and a spiciness not usually found in double IPAs.  A strong hop bitterness is balanced out by an equally formidable malt presence.

Coney Island Lager – 5.5% alc.
Step right up and witness the delectable alchemy of 8 malts, 6 hops, and Czech Pilsner yeast.  Discover the thrill of old world brewing conjoined with beguiling new world flavor.

Who’s in? We’ll be at Lung Shan Restaurant at 2234 Mission Street.

Hmmm. A beer-themed MSF night on the same day as the Fort Bragg beerfest. Oh, the tortured decisions that confront a beer fan…

Man that stuff sounds amazing. It’s not fair that I get tracked back to your blog only to find out this amazing food is nowhere near me. If I ever am in the area on the right evening though I’ll have to try to swing by MSF and try some of those amazing things your always posting about. Problem is getting away from my brew kettle long enough to get over there :)
